Sewing for Beginners - Wednesday
Mumbles. 12 hours over 4 weeks.
Service Description
Learn basic machine sewing skills Do you have a sewing machine at home, but never use it as you are not really sure what to do? Or maybe you have been thinking about learning to sew, but would like to give it a go before buying a machine? This course is designed for the sewing beginner or anyone lacking confidence in their ability to get started. In order to get the best out of this course, it will be expected that you know how to set up a sewing machine ready to sew and to sew in a straight(ish!) line. If you cannot do this, I suggest you come along to “An Introduction to Sewing” class before starting this course. Completing a project every session, I will help you to build your skills and confidence so you are able to make a range of useful and decorative items for your home, yourself or to give as gifts. Use a sewing machine to create 4 projects, each building on the skills learnt in the previous week. Each week will focus on a particular skill, which will be practised before using it in our project. You will start to build a portfolio of sewing skills and techniques, which you can take home to refer to in the future. By the time you have completed the course you will be able to: Sew confidently along curves and around corners Hem your sewing by machine Make a button hole using a 4 part method on your machine. hand sew a button onto fabric. Insert a zip Gather fabric Sew straps and casings Make bias binding Apply decorative piping Make a patch pocket MATERIALS We encourage the reuse of fabric from old household items and clothing. If you do not have any of these at home, they can often be purchased cheaply in second hand and charity shops. I will send precise details of fabric requirements with the course information pack. All other materials and use of sewing machines are provided. Or, if you prefer, you can purchase a Fabric Kit, containing all the fabric you will need to complete the projects. Kits cost £35 and can be ordered in our shop. Kits must be ordered at least 5 working days before the course starts. Alternatively, we will have a small selection of fabric available to purchase on the day. I try very hard not to cancel sessions, but it is occasionally unavoidable. Should this occur you will be offered the choice of a place in a later course or a refund for the missed session. Fees are otherwise non refundable.
