Service Description

Starting to get to grips with your sewing machine? Perhaps you have attended the beginners sewing course, and can now keep your stitches going the way you want them to with ease. You know how to turn corners and have maybe even tried putting in a zip or two. Now is the time to take the next step, and to venture into making clothes - for you, for a family member or for a lucky friend. Carefully planned to build on the skills learned in the Beginner's Course, during the next six weeks you will learn to follow a pattern and make 4 garments (time permitting!): pyjama trousers, an A line skirt, a box blouse and a tunic dress. (I understand that some people might not want to wear these items, but I have selected them as offering both a variety of projects and involving several different skills in each project. However, if you really don't want to make one or more of the items, then let me know and I will come up with a suitable alternative project.) By the time you have completed the course you will be able to: Use darts to shape a garment Apply an elasticated waistband Attach a fitted waistband Finish necklines with bias binding Use facings Use a variety of hem and seam finishes Make a button hole using a 4 part method on your machine. hand sew a button onto fabric. Insert a zip Be able to make 4 basic garments: the patterns of which can be adapted to make a huge variety of differently designed items of clothing. MATERIALS We encourage the reuse of fabric from old household items and clothing. If you do not have any of these at home, they can often be purchased cheaply in second hand and charity shops. I will send precise details of fabric requirements with the course information pack. All other materials and use of sewing machines are provided. Or, if you prefer, you can purchase a Fabric Kit, containing all the fabric you will need to complete the projects. Kits must be ordered at least 5 working days before the course starts. I try very hard not to cancel sessions, but it is occasionally unavoidable. Should this occur you will be offered the choice of a place in a later course or a refund for the missed session. Fees are otherwise non refundable.
